History Repeats: Student Award

The Department Award was established years ago in the Fine Arts Department of Taipei National University of the Arts. It is an art prize to honor valuable student works. Although organized by students, teachers still make up the entire panel of judges. Out of frustration and disappointment over the assessment procedure, which left students with a more critical approach unacknowledged, six of our classmate including me decided to establish a Student Award in The Department Award on 2015 as a means to create a more democratic and less hierarchical method of evaluation as well as to give more space for critique and diversity. The Student Award assessment procedure would include different batches of students, coming together to discuss, rather than judge.

In summer 2017 we then gathered again to recall the memories of the Student Award and met up for discussions on every Monday over the course of four months. As a result we decided to use the video material of 2 years ago and interview people who related to make it into a three episode documentary video. The intention was to practice critique and free up space for discussion, as well as establish a connection towards the people in power – the idea being a diagonal expressway across hierarchical patterns based on transparency and direct communication.

學生講:學生獎

“系展”機制於很多年前前在北藝大美術系成立,這是一項鼓勵學生創作榮譽的獎項。雖然由學生組織協辦,教師則是決定所有獎項的評審。由於對評審機制的感到某種沮喪和失望,這讓學生們更加渴望批判一種不能被批判的機制,因此我與其5位同學決定在2015的系展中年創立學生獎,以此作為創建更民主與更少等級的評審,以及為批評和多樣性提供更多的討論空間。學生評審程序將包括不同年級的學生聚在一起討論,不僅僅是評審而已。

2017年夏天,我們再次聚集在一起回憶關於學生獎的記憶,並在四個月的每個星期一進行討論。因此,我們決定使用2年前的視頻材料,並採訪參與系展與學生獎的同學,將素材製作成三集短篇的紀錄片。其目的是實踐機制批判並騰出更多討論空間,思索機制的透明度與當權者的聯繫,的跨層次模式追根究底。
