Opening night of the Duality Pub
The work was made in collaboration with the artist Zsam Yau. There is a glass house located in the right wing of the Department of Fine Arts at the Taipei National University of the Arts. It takes about 20 footsteps from the office of the Fine Arts Department to reach the glass house. The glass house resembles a greenhouse and was constructed as a means to give students a chance to exhibit their works and can be seen from every part of the Fine Arts Departments courtyard. Still, the glasshouse remains always empty and unattended, whilst the school corridors bustle with people. The concept of a bar originates from continental Europe and is designed for people to enjoy drinks and spend their leisure time in company of others. The existence of the bar itself is a supplement for the lack of interpersonal relationships, and has had a social function since its birt
Earlier in our lives both me and Zsam had been working on the construction of a new bar. The work consisted mostly of decorative cement carving. We later realised that after spending time together on the construction site we hadn’t been to a bar again which made us think of our new project Duality Pub. The idea was to remake the cement carving and install it in the glass house, after which we opened our own pub for one day.
The work Duality Pub his is a work that responds to the glass houses’ unused space as well as a lack of interaction between humans.
