As I start to embrace myself as an outsider to the Chinese context, I regard Chinese ink painting as a drawing method, just as in Western contemporary drawing. A drawing method to document the mundane objects in life. In some way, at least nominally, it doesn’t look very different from what Chinese artist did in the course of centuries and millennia. By writing idioms in the form of calligraphy next to the objects that I paint, I decorate the painting. I do not care about the importance or a certain importance of the calligraphy but instead use words, mundane sayings, to let the imagery and the representation exist in the chinese ink painting at the same time. I have no idea what this will lead me to but I hope I will discover a new way of depicting the mixture of backgrounds and cultures that form my life.
